Specialists in communication are often hired to clean up problems
created by unthoughtful messaging. While advocates dedicate
significant amounts of time and energy promoting causes, they often
struggle to clearly identify their logical positions. To further the
problem, in light of clear arguments advocates commonly utilize
informal fallacies to persuade their target audiences. These
weaknesses tend to create easily avoidable communications crises but
the first step is to identify the communicative problems.

For this assignment you should identify a social issue you are
personally interested in learning more about, advocating for the
cause, or are against, and identify their fallacious reasoning.

In 500-750 words:

  1. Research an advocate (individual or organization) that
promotes a relevant social issue. Identify the organization and
explain the relevancy of the social issue.
  2. Show the
steps you took to translate the position/argument you researched
into a clear logical form by writing out the logical premises and
conclusions from the material presented by the advocate.
  3. Identify a minimum of five informal fallacies that are made by
the advocate. Explain the fallacies themselves and how each
    functions.

At least two academic peer-reviewed sources are required for
this paper.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment,
solid academic writing is expected. In-text citations and references
should be presented using APA Style Guide, located in the Student
Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to

Additionally, students are required to identify a minimum of five informal fallacies made by the advocate, explaining each fallacy and its function. The assignment requires at least two academic peer-reviewed sources and adherence to APA style guidelines. The submission of the assignment to Turnitin is also mandatory.

Answer:
The chosen social issue for this assignment is climate change, and the advocate to be researched is The Sierra Club, an environmental organization dedicated to preserving and protecting natural spaces.

The relevancy of climate change as a social issue lies in its impact on the environment, human health, and social justice. Climate change poses immediate and long-term threats to the planet’s ecosystems, and its consequences can be felt on a global scale. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and ecological disruptions all pose significant risks to human populations, especially vulnerable communities. Therefore, addressing climate change is essential in protecting both the environment and human well-being.

To translate The Sierra Club’s position on climate change into a logical form, it is necessary to examine the premises and conclusions presented by the advocate. The organization argues that human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, are leading causes of climate change. They argue that immediate action is required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy sources. The logical form of their argument can be summarized as follows:

Premise 1: Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are major contributors to climate change.
Premise 2: Climate change poses significant risks to the environment and human well-being.
Conclusion: Immediate action is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy sources to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Identifying the informal fallacies used by The Sierra Club allows us to better analyze their argumentation. The following are five examples of informal fallacies made by the advocate and their explanations:

1. Ad Hominem Fallacy: The Sierra Club may use personal attacks against individuals or organizations who disagree with their position on climate change. Instead of addressing the arguments and evidence presented by the opposition, they attack the character or motives of those individuals or organizations.

2. Appeal to Emotion Fallacy: The advocate might try to evoke emotional responses from their target audience by emphasizing the potential consequences of climate change, such as the loss of ecosystems, species extinction, or human suffering caused by extreme weather events. While emotional appeals can be effective, they do not necessarily provide logical evidence for their position.

3. False Dichotomy Fallacy: The Sierra Club may present the argument that the only two options are immediate action to combat climate change or doing nothing at all. This oversimplification ignores potential alternative approaches and hinders critical evaluation and discussion.

4. Bandwagon Fallacy: The advocate might appeal to the popularity of the cause by highlighting the number of people or organizations that support their stance on climate change. However, the popularity of a position does not make it more logical or valid.

5. Straw Man Fallacy: The Sierra Club might misrepresent the arguments of their opponents by oversimplifying or distorting them. By attacking weakened or distorted versions of their opponents’ arguments, they avoid addressing the actual concerns and evidence presented by the opposition.

In conclusion, The Sierra Club is an advocate for addressing climate change, a socially relevant issue due to its environmental and human impact. The logical premises and conclusions of their arguments emphasize the role of human activities in climate change and the need for immediate action. However, the advocate also employs several informal fallacies, including ad hominem, appeal to emotion, false dichotomy, bandwagon, and straw man fallacies. Recognizing these fallacies is crucial for comprehensively understanding and evaluating their position.
