What is the difference between research- and evidence-based practice projects, health and medicine homework help Nursing Assignment Help

Introduction:
As a medical professor responsible for creating college assignments and evaluating student performance, I have designed lectures and assessments that aim to develop leadership skills in nursing students. This response will address the questions related to the characteristics of nurses as leaders, the difference between research- and evidence-based practice projects, and the utilization of evidence-based practice by nurse practitioners and nurse managers.

Discussion 1: Should all nurses be considered leaders? What characteristics of nurses make them leaders? How do your responses compare or contrast with the view of power according to servant leadership?

While it is not necessary to consider all nurses as formal leaders, nurses possess inherent qualities that make them leaders in their own right. Leadership in nursing is often evidenced through various characteristics such as empathy, communication abilities, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to providing patient-centered care (Scully, 2020).

The view of power according to servant leadership aligns well with the characteristics of nurses as leaders. Servant leadership emphasizes placing the needs of others first and serving their best interests. Nurses exhibit servant leadership qualities by prioritizing patient care, advocating for their patients’ rights, and working collaboratively within the healthcare team (Hood, 2018).

Discussion 2: What is the difference between research- and evidence-based practice projects? Provide an example of each one and the reason for the difference. Why should nurses be interested in learning about EBP?

Research-based practice refers to the utilization of research findings to make informed clinical decisions. It involves conducting studies to generate new knowledge and innovations in the field of nursing. For example, a research-based practice project could involve conducting a clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of new medication in managing a specific condition.

On the other hand, evidence-based practice (EBP) involves integrating the best available evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to guide decision-making and improve patient outcomes. An example of an EBP project could be implementing a standardized protocol for post-operative pain management based on existing research evidence.

Nurses should be interested in learning about EBP as it enables them to deliver high-quality care based on the latest evidence. EBP facilitates critical thinking and decision-making skills, enhances the nurse’s professional growth, and ultimately improves patient outcomes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).

Discussion 3: How would a nurse practitioner and a nurse manager differ with regard to how they use and incorporate EBP in their areas of practice?

Nurse practitioners and nurse managers differ in their roles and responsibilities, which subsequently influences their utilization and incorporation of EBP.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice nurses who provide direct patient care. As clinical experts, NPs play a significant role in implementing EBP in their practice. They are responsible for staying up-to-date with current research, critically appraising evidence, and applying it to their clinical decision-making processes. NPs actively incorporate EBP to provide evidence-based interventions and improve patient outcomes.

In contrast, nurse managers primarily focus on administrative and managerial tasks. While they may not be involved in direct patient care, nurse managers play a vital role in promoting an environment that supports EBP by facilitating staff education, resource allocation, and fostering a culture of inquiry. Nurse managers are encouraged to stay informed about industry trends and best practices to effectively promote and support the implementation of EBP within their unit or organization.
