RESPOND TO THIS POST:

The points that stood out to me while reading Lead-Down 3-7 were in Lead-Down Principle #5, “Your Attitude Determines the Atmosphere” and “Your Work Ethic Determines The Productivity.” About 7 years ago I worked for a medical staffing agency and my boss was a middle leader. This agency was small at the time, so the owner of the company was her boss and then she was my boss. Her name was Jenny, and she was one of the sweetest people I have ever worked with.

In the past I have had leaders who were negative and overall, not happy, which in turn led to a toxic work environment. Jenny on the other hand was always incredibly positive, even when work life would get hectic. I remember walking in every morning happy to go to my job, because I knew I would be greeted with a warm smile, and cheery “Good Morning!” Jenny exemplified the meaning of attitude determining the atmosphere, because her positive attitude made our work environment pleasant.

The next point she exemplified was “Your Work Ethic Determines The Productivity.” Jenny had a strong work ethic and worked hard to find our clients a provider, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant to fill a position at their facility. Every time I would go into her office, she was on the phone speaking with a client or diligently typing away on her computer working hard to place people at different healthcare facilities. The work I did helped keep the ball rolling for her to get her job done correctly. Knowing this and seeing how hard she worked to provide for our clients made me want to be just as productive. Jenny proved the point of being a productive leader will lead to your employees doing the same. She demonstrated everyday what it means to be a 360-degree leader.

One article that relates to the discussion on the Lead-Down Principle #5 is “The Influence of Transformational Leadership, Organizational Culture, and Emotional Intelligence on the Work-related Attitudes of Nurses” by Hsu et al. (2018). The article highlights the importance of leaders’ attitudes and work ethics in influencing the work-related attitudes of their subordinates. The authors found that transformational leadership, positive organizational culture, and emotional intelligence positively influenced nurses’ job satisfaction and organizational commitment. These findings align with the Lead-Down Principle #5 that states a leader’s attitude determines the atmosphere and work ethic determines productivity. Therefore, it is important for leaders to cultivate a positive attitude and strong work ethic to foster a positive work environment and enhance employee productivity and satisfaction.
