Introduction:
As a medical professor, it is essential to educate future medical professionals not only on medical knowledge but also on ethical principles and professional standards. This thread will discuss two topics: firstly, the American Nurses Association (ANA) official position statement, and secondly, the ethical principles that prompted a nurse’s action in a controversial video.

Part 1:
The ANA is an organization that develops positions relevant to nursing practice, health policy, and social concerns that affect the health of patients and families. The ANA’s official positions guidance for the nursing profession, educate consumers, and inform policymakers. One of the ANA’s official positions is Safe Staffing. The ANA believes that safe staffing is essential to the provision of high-quality patient care, patient outcomes, and patient and nurse safety.

The ANA position on Safe Staffing is supported by substantial evidence that insufficient nursing staff can result in negative patient outcomes, such as patient safety incidents, increased mortality rates, and patient dissatisfaction. Therefore, the ANA supports federal nurse staffing legislation to ensure adequate nurse staffing and protect the health and safety of patients.

As a medical professor, I believe that safe staffing levels are essential to providing quality patient care. Nurses are integral to patient care, and they perform a wide range of critical roles, including administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and providing emotional and psychological support to patients. Adequate staffing levels ensure that nurses can provide quality care and do not become overburdened, which can negatively impact patient outcomes.

Part 2:
The controversial video of a nurse refusing to give the police a patient’s blood sample has sparked a debate on ethical principles in nursing. The ethical principles that prompted the nurse’s action in the video were autonomy and non-maleficence. The principle of autonomy affirms that patients have the right to make decisions about their health care, and healthcare practitioners have a duty to respect their decisions. The principle of non-maleficence, on the other hand, requires practitioners to prevent harm to patients.

In the video, the nurse was following hospital policy when she refused to give the police the blood sample because the patient did not consent, and the police did not have a warrant. This action demonstrated the nurse’s adherence to the ethical principle of patient autonomy. Furthermore, the nurse’s action demonstrated her commitment to non-maleficence as she refused to follow an order that could harm the patient.

In conclusion, ethical principles are essential in nursing practice. The ANA’s official positions provide guidance to nursing professionals on various issues relevant to patient care, and ethical principles are the foundation of the nursing profession. As a medical professor, I believe it is vital to educate nursing students on ethical principles to ensure that they provide high-quality patient care and uphold professional standards.
