Introduction:

Medical research plays a crucial role in enhancing healthcare practices and positively transforming patient outcomes. As a medical professor, it is my responsibility to guide and mentor my students to develop skills required to gather quality research articles for their capstone project change proposal. In this document, I will provide responses to two assessment descriptions, focusing on the identification of suitable scholarly databases and ethical research practices.

Question 1: Identify two GCU Library scholarly databases that will help you find the best research articles to support your capstone project change proposal. Discuss why these two databases are better than Google Scholar or a general Internet search. What benefit does peer review have over a regular research study/academic article?

Two GCU Library scholarly databases that can help students find the best research articles to support their capstone project change proposal are CINAHL and MEDLINE databases. These databases provide students with access to a wide range of peer-reviewed articles written by experts in the medical field. The advantage of using these databases is that the information contained in these articles are credible, reliable and up-to-date. Students can also access academic journals and scientific publications that are edited and reviewed by a board of experts in the field, ensuring that the research is of higher quality and accuracy.

On the other hand, Google Scholar or a general internet search can provide students with numerous articles. However, most of these articles are not peer-reviewed, and as such, they may not be reliable or credible. Additionally, students may spend more time rejecting irrelevant articles or weeding out sources that don’t align with medical research standards.

Peer review has several benefits over regular research study/academic articles. Firstly, peer-reviewed articles have already been examined by experts in the field who ensure that the research methodology, data analysis, and results are of high quality and accurate. Peer-reviewed articles also undergo a rigorous approval process where the quality of the research is assessed against the highest standards of accuracy, reliability and ethical standards.

Question 2: Define ethical research. Give one example of ethical misconduct, and give examples of why you think this. Provide one example of an unethical research study and state why it is unethical.

Ethical research refers to research that adheres to strict moral principles and values, intended to safeguard the welfare, dignity, and rights of participants and ensure its accuracy, reliability and scientific validity. Ethical research upholds the highest degree of transparency, fairness, responsibility, and honesty, making sure that participants are not subjected to any harm, exploitation, coercion, or deception.

One example of ethical misconduct could be falsifying data in a research study. This can be intentional or unintentional. Researchers who commit this kind of misconduct violate ethical standards and undermine the integrity of their work. When the data is manipulated, the reliability and accuracy of the study may be compromised. This affects its ability to be translated into practice, which undermines the purpose of the research project.

An example of unethical research is the Tuskegee experiment. The experiment was conducted on Black American men and involved denying them treatment for syphilis, even after a cure was discovered. Researchers carried out the experiment for forty years, from 1932 to 1972, leading to an increase in mortality and other health-related issues for the participants. The study was unethical because it violated the rights of participants, failed to provide them with the standard of care, and was exploitative.
