Introduction:

The healthcare sector requires leadership and management to function effectively. Although these two terms seem interchangeable, they hold distinct differences that should not be ignored. This paper will explain and highlight the similarities and differences between management and leadership in healthcare through the examination of research articles.

Similarities and Differences between Leadership and Management:

Leadership and management are often used interchangeably, but they hold distinct differences. Management is about directing and organizing people and resources towards achieving specific goals, whereas, leadership is about influencing individuals to achieve a common goal. Leadership involves inspiring, motivating, and coaching individuals to work towards a shared vision. In contrast, management involves setting objectives, aligning resources, and monitoring and executing assigned tasks (Ellis & Abbott, 2013).

Another difference between leadership and management is that leaders are focused on long-term goals and objectives that will benefit the organization, while managers are focused on attaining specific goals within a specific time frame. Leaders take a strategic perspective on the organization and collate resources to attain the desired outcome. Managers take an operational perspective and allocate resources to complete tasks within deadlines. Leaders aim to shift the paradigm of their team or organization, while managers adapt to changes occurring within the system.

Despite the differences between leadership and management, there are similarities in the skills required to perform these roles. These similarities include critical thinking, decision making, problem-solving, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to motivate people towards a common goal. Both leadership and management involve identifying the strengths and weaknesses of team members, providing constructive feedback, motivating employees, and facilitating the continuous development of team members.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, leadership and management are essential for effective healthcare services delivery. While they share commonalities, they differ in their approach towards setting and achieving organizational objectives. Managers are essential for executing day-to-day tasks and achieving short-term goals within a specific time frame. Leaders are critical for implementing long-term strategies, shifting the paradigm, and creating a shared vision for all team members. Healthcare organizations should recognize the differences between leadership and management and develop a strategy where both roles work together to achieve the organization’s goal.
