Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice

A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.

However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.

Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.

To Prepare:.

  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

ASSIGNMENT

Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.

Introduction:
Leadership theories play a crucial role in the success of any organization. Medical students need to understand the importance of leadership theories and their practical implementation in healthcare organizations. As a medical professor, it is my responsibility to design assignments that encourage students to reflect on leadership theories and their effectiveness in creating a healthy work environment.

Answer:
The two key insights I had from the scholarly resources I selected are the importance of emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors in creating a healthy work environment. Emotional intelligence helps leaders to understand and manage their emotions and the emotions of their team members. Meanwhile, transformational leadership behaviors inspire and motivate team members to achieve challenging goals.

I have worked with a leader who use these behaviors and skills effectively. She was empathetic towards her team members and always made an effort to understand their emotions. She also provided constructive feedback and encouraged her team members to grow both professionally and personally. Her transformational leadership behaviors motivated the team to work towards shared goals and encouraged creativity and innovation.

The practice of these skills had a positive impact on the workplace. The team members were more engaged and motivated to achieve challenging goals. They also felt supported and valued, which resulted in a sense of job satisfaction. As a result, the workplace was a more collaborative and productive environment.
