HI253: Medical Coding I

Topic 1: All About CPT Modifiers

Choose a CPT modifier (Level I) and write a scenario that might appear in the physician’s notes that would lead you to use that modifier.

Example 1: Ronald Aswan, a 15-year-old male, came to Dr. Pollard to have corrective surgery on both of his eyes. The modifier used would be -50 to indicate the procedure was done on BOTH eyes—a bilateral procedure.

Example 2: John Jung, a 2-week-old male, was rushed into surgery for repair of a septal defect. If the repair is not completed successfully, he may not survive. The correct anesthesia physical status modifier is -P5.

Participation Expectations: Your main post to the discussion should contain at least 150 words, with no more than 10% quoting, and cite any sources used on a reference list following APA format.

SC121: Human Anatomy and Physiology I

Topic 2: Food diary

This week’s discussion will focus on the importance of calcium consumption for the health of your body; particularly your bones. Bones are dynamic structures which are constantly undergoing remodeling. What happens if something goes wrong with that process and the density of bone decreases? Can you stop the loss or reverse it? This week, you will investigate different ways to prevent bone loss by developing good nutrition habits.

Think about what you eat in a week. Describe a typical meal and research the calcium content of that meal for both food and drink. Take that value of calcium in mg and multiply by 3 to get a rough estimate of what your daily intake is. Next, research how much calcium you should be consuming for your gender and age. You may find this information on food labels or by researching it online. As always, references are required for this post. When you have finished, answer the following questions:

  • How much calcium should you be consuming for your gender and age?
  • List each food item from one of your largest meals during the week (i.e., dinner).
    • Which food listed had the highest calcium content?
    • Which food had the lowest?
    • Were you surprised at your findings? Why or why not?
  • Based on your findings, do you meet the recommended daily allowance for calcium?
  • What specific recommendations can you make to someone to ensure that they take in enough calcium through their daily diet? How could you apply this to your own life?
  • Why is it important to get enough vitamin D along with calcium? What are the ways to get enough vitamin D?

For the HI253: Medical Coding I assignment, students should choose a CPT modifier and provide a scenario in which it would be used based on the physician’s notes. Their main post should be at least 150 words with no more than 10% quoting and include APA formatted references. The participation expectations and guidelines for the discussion can be found in the attached Discussion Requirements and Guidelines and HI253 Discussion Board Scoring Guide.

For the SC121: Human Anatomy and Physiology I assignment, students are tasked with analyzing their own calcium intake and researching how much calcium they should be consuming based on their age and gender. They should also identify the highest and lowest calcium-containing foods from a recent meal, along with any surprises they found in their findings. Additionally, students should discuss ways to get enough vitamin D alongside calcium and provide recommendations for others to ensure adequate calcium intake. The Discussion Requirements and Guidelines and SC121 Discussion Board Scoring Guide are attached for reference.
