Introduction:

As a medical professor, it is my responsibility to design and conduct lectures, evaluate student performance, and provide feedback through examinations and assignments. In this assignment, I will be answering two questions related to medical research and nursing research. The first question requires me to provide examples of experimental and nonexperimental research design and contrast the levels of control applied to each. The second question asks me to describe sampling theory, provide examples, and discuss generalizability as it applies to nursing research.

1) Examples of Experimental and Nonexperimental Research Design and Levels of Control Applied:

Experimental research designs involve manipulating an independent variable to see how it affects a dependent variable while controlling for extraneous variables. Some examples of experimental research design include randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, and single-subject designs. In experimental research, high levels of control are applied to ensure that the effects observed are due to the manipulated variable and not due to any confounding variables. This is achieved through measures such as random assignment of participants, blinding, and use of control groups.

Nonexperimental research designs, on the other hand, do not involve manipulation of variables. Instead, they focus on observing existing relationships between variables. Examples of nonexperimental research design include correlation studies and descriptive studies. In nonexperimental research, lower levels of control are applied as the researcher cannot control the variables being observed. However, measures such as selection of appropriate samples and control of extraneous variables can still be applied.

2) Sampling Theory and Generalizability in Nursing Research:

Sampling theory refers to the method of selecting participants from a larger population in order to conduct a study. The goal is to ensure that the sample is representative of the population so that results can be generalized to the population. Examples of sampling techniques include simple random sampling, stratified sampling, and cluster sampling.

Generalizability in nursing research refers to the extent to which the findings and conclusions of a study can be applied to the larger population of interest. In order to enhance generalizability, researchers must ensure that their sampling technique is appropriate and that the sample is representative of the population. However, it is important to note that generalizability is limited by factors such as the design, methods, and characteristics of the study population.
