Week 1 EXAMPLE ASSIGNMENT GUIDE: Uploaded

Introduction:

The concept of global citizenship has become increasingly important in a world where globalization and interconnectivity are the norm. As a medical professor, it is crucial that I design assignments that challenge my students to think critically about their role in society and how they can contribute to the betterment of the world. In this assignment, students will reflect on how being a global citizen can benefit their personal, academic, and professional goals, and develop their own definition of global citizenship.

Answer:

To understand the distinction between “globalism” and “globalization,” it is essential to recognize that globalism refers to the ideology that promotes one-world government, while globalization refers to the interconnectedness between nations, economies, and cultures. In other words, globalism is a political ideology, while globalization is a phenomenon that occurs naturally as nations become more interconnected.

In today’s world of advanced technology, being a global citizen can be highly beneficial to one’s success in meeting personal, academic, and professional goals. As a global citizen, one is exposed to and can learn from diverse ideas, cultures, and practices. This exposure can improve critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, all of which are essential in medicine. Additionally, global citizens are often more adaptable, communicative, and empathetic, skills that are crucial in a medical setting.

Despite the importance of global citizenship, there has been disagreement among theorists about its definition. Reysen and Katzarska-Miller (2013) define global citizenship as the “combination of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors which leads a person to become responsible, committed, and active members of local and global communities.” This definition suggests that global citizenship involves understanding and acknowledging one’s responsibility to the world and taking action to make it a better place.

The two most important outcomes of global citizenship are intergroup empathy and social justice. Intergroup empathy involves understanding and valuing diverse perspectives, which can lead to increased cross-cultural communication and collaboration. Social justice involves promoting fairness and equality for all individuals and groups, regardless of their background or circumstances. Both intergroup empathy and social justice are necessary to create a just and equitable world.

Two personal examples of events in my life that illustrate the development of global citizenship include serving as a volunteer in a medical mission in a developing country and studying abroad in a diverse community. These experiences exposed me to different cultures and practices, and I learned to appreciate the value of diversity.

Two specific general education courses that influenced me to become a global citizen are cultural anthropology and ethics. Cultural anthropology taught me to understand and appreciate different cultures and ways of life, while ethics helped me to develop critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills.
