In 1995, Daniel Goleman brought the concept of emotional intelligence into the business world with his book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. Goleman’s model defines EI as a blend of skills and characteristics that guide leadership decisions and can influence organizational success. In fact, EI has had a tremendous impact on the business world and many organizations worldwide use EI for hiring, promoting, and developing employees (Goleman, n.d.).As a health care leader, you will face a variety of obstacles and will need to use leadership skills to move teams forward and overcome barriers. Assessing the environment encompasses the morale and needs of individual team members, as well as perhaps the department or strategic business unit. Effective leaders utilize their natural leadership strengths and can enhance results via integration of personal leadership and emotional intelligence.

Section One: Emotional Intelligence and Leadership

Effective leadership requires emotional intelligence (EI), which involves the ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. It also involves the ability to use emotions to guide behavior and decision-making. According to Goleman (1995), EI strengthens leadership skills by allowing leaders to better understand and manage their emotions and those of their team members. This enables them to create a positive work environment and build strong relationships with team members. Specifically, EI can improve a leader’s ability to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and inspire and motivate team members.

Understanding and managing emotions can make a more effective leader because it allows them to connect with their team members on a deeper level. This can lead to increased trust, respect, and commitment from team members, which ultimately leads to an improved work environment and better results.

Section Two: Personal Leadership Assessment

In a chaotic and stressful situation, I once had to manage a situation where a patient’s condition was deteriorating rapidly, and we had limited resources to provide the necessary care. I quickly assessed the situation, coordinated care with the available resources, and calmed the patient’s family members. However, upon reflection, I realized that I could have better managed my emotional response to the situation by remaining calmer and more composed. I could have achieved this by taking a step back, focusing on the facts, and strategizing a plan to address the issue.

Going forward, I plan to better manage my emotional response to stressful situations by practicing mindfulness, seeking support from colleagues, and taking a moment to step back, reflect, and strategize.

Section Three: Personal Leadership Brand Statement

My personal leadership brand is collaborative resiliency, so that I can foster effective teamwork and adapt to change while delivering optimal patient care. As a leader, I focus on collaboration, communication, and building strong relationships with team members. I am also adaptable and resilient, which allows me to handle difficult situations and drive change. This brand reflects my strengths in communication and teamwork, as well as my ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

Section Four: Personal Leadership Model

My leadership model focuses on guiding highly effective teams towards meeting the organization’s strategic goals. To achieve this, I will utilize evidence-based leadership strategies that are informed by emotional intelligence, collaboration, and resilience. I will also use financial forecasting to guide leadership decisions and ensure that resources are allocated effectively. My leadership approach will be guided by the organization’s mission and values, as well as professional and personal ethics.

To lead highly effective teams, I will prioritize communication, collaboration, and building strong relationships with team members. By leveraging emotional intelligence, I will be able to understand and manage my own emotions and those of my team members. I will also be adaptable and resilient, which allows me to handle difficult situations and drive change. Additionally, I will use financial forecasting to guide leadership decisions and ensure that resources are allocated effectively to meet the organization’s strategic goals. Overall, my leadership model will be guided by the organization’s mission and values, as well as my personal and professional ethics.
