First, select a graphic novel from the class list. The list of novels has been carefully curated in consultation with the reference librarians to meet the needs of this class. Each student will select a unique graphic novel for analysis without overlap. Read the graphic novel. take notes and annotations with page numbers when you read or recognize something happening that is related to the intercultural communication concepts you’ve been learning. You will write four responses about the graphic novel by selecting four (4) general or specific theories, concepts, or key words (herein referred to as “concepts”) from each of four (4) different chapters in our textbook. Each of the four responses should be a minimum of 250 words. For each of the four chapters, you are going to (1) define the concepts, (2) relate the concepts to the graphic novel, and (3) relate the concepts to your own personal experiences. In addition, you’ll provide a brief summary or synopsis of the graphic novel so that your reader has a general idea of the overall story. How to do it… Do not simply recount what happens in the book. apply the concepts to the relationships in the book and to your own relationships. If you’re just describing what happens in the book without making conceptual connections with examples and illustrations, you’re not “doing it right.” Your paper should be more concerned with how the concept applies to specific examples within the book rather than the story of the book. Be sure to introduce and describe how the concept is being used rather than “dumping” the information and expecting the reader to infer your intended use. For example (from a different class), consider this passage which assumes the reader knows what you’re talking about: Although the two main characters were in love with one another, their nonverbal communication rarely supported this supposition. Indeed, rather than the expected love-intimacy touch (McCornack, 2015, p. 164), the couple seemed to use only functional-professional touch (McCornack, 2015, p. 164), which seemed quite awkward for a romantic couple. Now consider this example which explains and elaborates the definitions for the reader: Although the two main characters were in love with one another, their nonverbal communication rarely supported this supposition. Indeed, rather than the expected love-intimacy touch (McCornack, 2015, p. 164) which is a form of touch conveying deep emotional feelings, the couple seemed to use only functional-professional touch (McCornack, 2015, p. 164), which is more of a ritualized and less intimate touch like shaking hands or guiding them down stairs, which seemed quite awkward for a romantic couple. Be sure to boldface the use of the concept that you’re using, along with an in-text citation of the text with page number (modified APA in-text citation). Use section headings within your paper for (Synopsis, Concept name and Chapter) Thus, your paper structure should follow this guideline, using APA standards and formatting: Title Page Synopsis (150-250 words, paraphrased in your own words. don’t plagiarize!) I recommend looking for the key terms in the Chapter Review section of each chapter. Choose concepts from four (4) different chapters to apply to the graphic novel and to your own relationships. Choose wisely, as you’re looking for similarities between the graphic novel and yourself. Remember that these concepts often have multiple parts and principles, so be sure to elaborate in your paper what aspects of the concepts you’re applying.
